A 1942 photo of Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl and Christoph Probst - members of the student resistance group, “White Rose”. The group distributed pamphlets across Germany appealing to the public’s sense of moral duty, calling for resistance to the Nazi dictatorship, and demanding an end to the war.

Sophie would be caught and reported to the Gestapo on the 18th of February, 1943 at Ludwig Maximilians University. All three would then be sentenced 5 days later and beheaded.

Tomorrow I graduate and then the day after, at 6am, I set off to Scotland on foot with a friend. I feel slightly unprepared, food has not really been discussed between me and my friend that much, for the best part of the trip we will probably be lighting fires outside our tent and cooking tinned food in pans. Occasionally, I presume, we will have lunch in villages and towns and buy more for the days and nights ahead.

The journey is the best part of 700 miles with the chance of becoming shorter or longer depending on how many rides we can catch and where we might stay over-night. Scotland looks much smaller on a map sprawled out across a bed, but I have the feeling we may have to compromise on a few of our selected destinations in order to complete the trip in the time with have available.

We will pitch up on the edges of lochs, in forests, on the sides of mountains, and perhaps even upon beaches. I am looking forward to seeing some amazing landscapes and scenery, trying some Scottish whiskey, and reaching John O’groats with a celebratory cigar in hand.

Me and my friend Jack are setting off on the 5th of July to Scotland on foot from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Thats 700 miles! At an average walking speed of 3 mph, that would take a total of 2100 hours.

However, we have decided to mix-and-match in respect to our means of travel. In an ideal world we would walk 30-40% and hitch-hike 70-60%. This may be possible but who knows. Anyway, this is what we are looking to achieve. We are going to do this as cheaply as possible camping whenever we can.

Our route is going to take us from our home town to Stoke on Trent via Birmingham and then passing through Manchester and Liverpool on the West side of England, this will all be done as hastily as possible, not for a dislike of the areas but purely because our interest is focused on Scotland, no bushes shall be beaten.

We will stick to the west taking advantage of areas such as the Forest of Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales, and the Lake District. Eventually, having perhaps used the M6 as the most efficient route to Scotland, we would have arrived in Galloway. Galloway Park is a vast woodland that is isolated from artificial light enough to allow for crystal clear night sky’s. We can use this time to collect ourselves and regain some energy before really exploring Scotland.

We then move on to Edinburgh and then North Westerly toward the Grampian Mountains where we will make our way to Fort William passing beneath Ben Nevis. Next up is the part of the trip I am looking most forward to, Wester Ross and the surrounding landscape of the North West Highlands.

Neither of us are sure what to expect, weather is not an issue, if anything the prospect of torrential down pours and thrashing winds is something I am keen to embrace. Im sure there will be much more to the country than just the landscape, but for now it will do!

After screening my final film made for university I have already started a short travel-film about my time in Peru this August to September 2011. The film will be a combination of stills, footage, and journal extracts (Read as voice over).

There will be some really fun stuff finding its way into this film such as an interview with a real-life Shaman, Machu Picchu, a trek across the Andes and many images of a country completely different to this one.

I will throw up a trailer some time soon.

I have seen two dead dogs so far, one in the centre of a quiet back road with its hind legs both twisted around 180 degrees to where its spine should’ve been, a pool of blood from its open mouth upon the dusty road. The second was on the Panamericano Norte toward Shangri La, it was awkwardly laid out upon the busy road-side by dustbins and overflowing bin-bags.

It seems silly for a couple of dead strays to inspire my next thought, but the image of their lifeless bodies did make me think, are we not all just exactly like them, do we not all just spend the days running about in search of food, companionship and comfort, and do our lives also come abruptly to an end some time or another? What difference does it make whether it is by car or old-age? It all ends, and these wretched and helpless animals embody the purest form of that life cycle that every living thing must undergoe.
